Find out what's sweet about the latest Android version.
Last week, Google previewed the next Android — 8.0 aka Oreo — consistent with its practice of naming versions after sweets and confectionery. Here are the key add-ons:
Faster Performance and Improved battery: The new update boots your tasks two times faster, which means no lags. For longer battery life, the overlaying apps running in the background and the apps that are less used, close automatically. Oreo will automatically delete cache if your device becomes slow.
Multitask: A new picture-in-picture feature lets you open video apps like YouTube, Netflix, Duo, while you are working on any other app.
Notifications: Now you can organize and customize your notifications according to how you view them, and decide on a particular sound or vibration for any particular notification. You can also snooze them up to 2 hours. .
AutoFill and Smart Text Select: Jump into new apps directly from the browser; no installation needed. When you select a text, the app associated with it will automatically pop-up. For example, a selected phone number will get phonebook app or an address will get you Maps. Also, you can choose to auto-fill your log-in credentials, so you don’t have to remember every time.
Sameer Samat, Google's Vice President of product management for Android claims the operating system will be “smarter, faster and more powerful than ever”. Expect to find Android 8 on new phones by year end.
