OnePlus 5: The Salman Khan of smartphone brands
OnePlus is the Salman Khan of mobile brands and its latest release is anything but a mediocre one.
There are many kinds of smart phones. There are the run-of-the-mill smart phones. And then there are beefed up smart phones reeking of heavy specs. Then the occasional 'flagship', the occasional 'value buy' and all the while, there are smart phones that try to strike the balance between acceptable specs at acceptable prices. In this kumbh mela of devices, a handful of brands stand tall. The constant challenge for such a brand is to keep churning out one hit after another, pretty much like Salman Khan.
The recently launched OnePlus 5 was probably the most talked about phone over the last few months. Ahead of its launch, there were speculations, concerns, brickbats — everything synonymous with a Bollywood biggie, and when it finally popped up last week, it pretty much calmed everyone's nerves. The OnePLus 5 is a fine example of how small things make a big difference. Everything from design to the upgraded Oxygen OS to the super sensitive fingerprint scanner, to the quintessential OnePlus Dash Charger with its bright red charging cord, is manicured to look and feel good.
The 7.25mm device is one of the thinnest devices around. Design-wise, the aluminum unibody features a continuous line around the edge of the phone. The Horizon Line, apparently a key element of the OnePlus design, casts one half of the phone in light and the other in shadow, making the device look more streamlined. The new edition comes with a new crescent-shaped antenna that blends into the top and bottom edges, making the shell look clear and feel smooth.
And then there are a few bells and whistles — like a never-before-seen option of choosing your vibration patterns, really effective adaptive lighting, a do-not-disturb mode while gaming... and the 'pieces de resistence' — a jumbo dual lens rear camera, with a 16MP sensor, supported by a 20MP sensor and a telephoto lens, along with a 16MP front camera. It is powered by the latest Snapdragon 835 processor and comes with Android N. Available in two variants — 8GB RAM and 128GB storage in black and 6GB and 64GB in grey — the devices are priced at Rs 37,999 and Rs 32,999 respectively.
