TRAI to launch data speed check app on July 5, will now monitor data speeds
After ongoing disputes between consumers and service providers, TRAI steps in.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced that they will soon launch a new app called ‘MySpeed’ which will help consumers check the speed of the data they are receiving from their service providers. The app will also allow the consumers to report back with results so that the TRAI can take necessary actions.
The MySpeed app, which could be downloaded from the mobile app store, allows users to measure their data speed experience and send the results to TRAI, they said in a statement.
The portal and the application will be formally launched by the regulator on July 5, the statement said. The application will also send coverage, data speed and network information along with device and location of the customer, the statement said.
TRAI has defined minimum internet speed that should be delivered to consumers. However, consumers often complain of poor speed. The regulator during its drive test has also found that 3G customers of some operators were getting 2G internet speed most of the time in select cities.
Another PTI report highlights that IT industry body Nasscom said TRAI should give complete flexibility to apps and websites for deciding on provisions for rewarding free data to customers. In its response to consultation paper of TRAI on free data for telecom customers, the body also said operators should not have direct or indirect influence on the content that customers view on the Internet.
