Nasscom has said telecom regulator Trai should give complete flexibility to apps and websites to decide free data policy.

Mumbai: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will propose a new consultation paper for determining new service quality norms for wireless mobile data in a month.

According to reports, the new proposal by the telecom regulatory body will seek information from telcos regarding average internet speed they offer to consumers, with an aim to offer better mobile surfing speeds.

In 2014, Trai proposed a similar plan where it asked operators to indicate minimum speed offered by them. However, telcos refuted pointing out that it is against the ‘law of physics’ and such data cannot be accurately provided.

A rather ticked off Trai Chairman RS Sharma said that the telcos should at least provide the average data speed if they cannot provide the minimum speed.

The main aim of the consultation paper will help them determine and fix the quality of service benchmarking for wireless data, he added at an event where the Trai’s MySpeed app for consumers was launched.

The MySpeed app, which could be downloaded from the mobile app store, allows users to measure their data speed experience and send the results to TRAI.

This will help consumers check the speed of the data they are receiving from their service providers. The app will also allow the consumers to report back with results so that the TRAI can take necessary actions.
