Shocker! Apple doesn't trust in-display fingerprint sensors
Apple will use other biometrics instead of in-display fingerprint sensors for future iPhones.
For those of you who are expecting Apple to throw a ‘One more thing…’ sort of surprise and load the next generation iPhones with an in-display fingerprint sensor, then this bit of information may be a bit disappointing to you. As per a report by Apple Insider, Ming-Chi Quo has stated that Apple will not implement Touch ID in its full-screen phones at least in the near future.
As per the report, Kuo believes that Apple has faced little to no backlash over Face ID on the iPhone X and they do not feel the need to add Touch ID under their displays.
The report states that Android manufacturers will in all likelihood jump on the opportunity to use this technology as a differentiating factor even though there was a middling response to the Vivo X21 and its inclusion of an in-display fingerprint scanner. Also, using the existing facial recognition system on Android handsets are not as safe as Apple’s implementation and they have been fooled by photographs.
Kuo goes on to state that the upcoming Samsung flagship, the Galaxy S10 will come with an in-display fingerprint sensor. This year, the analyst expects in-display fingerprint technology to grow 500 per cent year-over-year through till next year which translates to around 15 million units in totality.
Another reason as to why Apple probably won’t use this technology is because as of now, they’re not as fast and reliable as regular fingerprint sensors. Also, in-display fingerprint sensors require an OLED display and that would substantially raise its cost if it was to be implemented.
If Apple does decide to use this technology, they would when in-display sensors would be able to be accessed anywhere across the display and not in just a particular area like how Vivo has implemented it.
