Xiaomi working on its own 10nm powerful octa-core Pinecone CPU
The new SoC is expected to make its debut with the Mi 5c smartphone.
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi seems to be gearing up to expand its options in terms of smartphone chipsets. The company is reportedly working on a powerful SoC that will be built on the 10nm process.
According to Chinese news agency Anzhuo, Xiaomi Pinecone CPU will have a Cortex-A53 cores in an octa-core architecture and will perform equivalent to a Snapdragon 808 processor. The new SoC is expected to make its debut with the Mi 5c smartphone.
Few online reports suggest that Xiaomi will launch two variants of the new chipset, codenamed: V670 and V970, while the Mi 5c could launch with the lower-end V670 inside.
The V670 uses four Cortex-A53 large cores and four Cortex-A53 small cores paired with Mali-T86 MP4 GPU and a clock speed of 800MHz. The V670 is expected to use the 28nm manufacturing process, while the higher-end model V970 will be using the 10nm process, the same as Snapdragon 835 or Samsung’s Exynos 8895.
Xiaomi MI 5c might not incorporate the high-end Pinecone CPU, but the chip can make its debut with the upcoming Mi 6s and Mi Note 3. With the launch of these chipsets, Xiaomi aims to reduce its dependency on Qualcomm for chips. Other companies, including Samsung have also started producing their own CPUs.
