Why is Xiaomi putting a notch in the top corner of the display?
Leaked videos of the upcoming Mi MIX 2S are indicating at a notch in the top corner of the display.
It’s official that the display notch introduced by Essential Phone PH-1 and Apple iPhone X will be followed by several other Android OEMs. The notch seems to be the only solution for housing all the necessary sensors and earpiece in a practical position. However, much before the notch trend started, Xiaomi came up with a full-screen display on their flagship Mi MIX in 2016. Their idea was to push the selfie camera to the bottom lip, which had some considerable bezel for technological limitations. However, leaks for the Mi MIX 2S reveal that Xiaomi could also be embracing the notch trend.
A few days ago, a leak on Weibo suggested the presence of a notch in the top right corner. And now, another leaked video on YouTube by Slashleaks suggests the same — the Mi MIX 2S could have a notch in the upper left corner of the display to house the selfie camera. If the leaks prove to be true, then the Mi MIX 2S could be the first smartphone to have a full-screen display with a notch that doesn’t ruin the immersive viewing experience.
However, there is another major benefit with a small notch in the corner of the display for the Mi MIX 2S. If you recall, in our review of the Mi MIX 2 launched last year, we had stated that the oddly placed selfie camera was an issue as one had to flip the phone every time for a video call or clicking selfies. With the selfie camera going up to a practical position, the user experience on the Mi MIX 2S could certainly improve by heavily.
Xiaomi is expected to unveil the Mi MIX 2S on March 27 in China with flagship class specifications such as a Snapdragon 845 chipset along with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and a rear dual camera setup.
