Smartphones will charge to full capacity in just five minutes, here's how
Israeli start-up StoreDot says batteries that charge in 5 minutes are on the way.
The thought alone of charging one’s smartphone to full capacity in just five minutes is exciting. Good news is that the technology that will transform this thought into reality is being developed.
Israeli startup StoreDot is reportedly planning on beginning production of its bulky ‘ultra-fast-charging’ technology in early 2018.
BBC reported the StoreDot CEO Doron Mysersdorf as saying that the technology is in pilot production at two Asian battery makers and will move into mass production in the first quarter of 2018.
To recall, StoreDot recent made the headlines for showing off a prototype of it at the Consumer Electronics Show that took place in Las Vegas in 2015. At the event, the company explained how tiny crystals dubbed ‘NanoDots,’ hold the potential to boost battery capacity tenfold. These 2-nanometres-long NanoDots are designed to act as capacitors to store energy at the same time as the energy is passed into the battery’s lithium at faster-than-usual speeds.
“We will charge a smartphone in five minutes,” Myersdorf told BBC.
The ‘ultra-fast-charging’ technology is also claimed to fully power an electric vehicle in just five minutes too. The firm demonstrated a proof of the concept at the CUBE Tech Fair that took place in Berlin recently.
“Fast-charging is the critical missing link needed to make electric vehicles ubiquitous,” says Myersdorf.
“The currently available battery technology dictates long charging times which makes the EV form of transportation inadequate for the public at large. We’re exploring options within a few strategic partners into the auto space to help us boost the production process in Asia and reach mass production as soon as possible,” he added.
