MWC 2016: HP announces a Windows 10 phone-cum-PC HP Elite x3

Microsoft has partnered with HP to build Windows-powered smartphones.

When connected to the Elite x3 using the USB Type-c connector, the unit can combine to become one and be used as a desktop PC.

HP has unveiled an enterprise edition smartphone which will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows 10. The move comes after HP split the business into printer and computer division into HP Inc and Hewlett Packard Enterprise last year. The HP Elite x3 is a high-end smartphone with a powerful hardware within.

The HP Elite x3 sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset with 2.15 GHz quad-core processors and 4GB of RAM and the internal storage provided is 64GB. The display peaks at a large 5.96-incher QHD 2560x1440 AMOLED display protected with a Gorilla Glass 4 layer. The two cameras feature a 16MP sensor and an 8MP sensor on the rear and front respectively. The wireless connectivity is 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, LTE advanced, Bluetooth 4.2 and a USB 3 Type-C connector. A 4150mAh battery fuels the Elite x3. Additionally, the smartphone is also water and dust-resistant with an IP67 certification.

HP has aimed the device to the enterprise customers. It is promoting the device heavily with security and privacy features. Not only does the Elite x3 have dual biometrics, but also features FIPS 140-2 cryptography, 256-bit key full disk encryption, TPM 2.0, protection against firmware rollbacks, and a few more.

To take things further, HP and Microsoft have pitched the Elite x3 for a desktop environment. The Elite comes with Continuum which allows the smartphone to be used as a desktop PC alike. Desk Dock is one accessory that can be used along with the device. It features Type-C connector, a DisplayPort, two USB Type-A, one Type-C, and RJ-45 Ethernet ports. The second accessory is the Mobile Extender which is nothing but a powered dumb display panel. It features a built-in battery with a display full HD 12.5-inch panel and a keyboard. When connected to the Elite x3 using the USB Type-c connector, the unit can combine to become one and be used as a desktop PC.

As for now, the pricing of the HP Elite x3 is unknown.
