Japanese students' eyesight deteriorates, government blames smartphone use
34.1 per cent of elementary students and up to 67.09 per cent of high school students did not have 1.0 vision.
Japan, which is one of the largest gaming markets in the world, has found the root cause for the poor eyesight of its young students - smartphones.
The country's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology recently conducted a survey and found that students with vision below the standard 1.0 score (20/20 vision) are at an all-time high of 25.3 per cent.
According to Sora News 24, 34.1 per cent of elementary students and up to 67.09 per cent of high school students did not have 1.0 vision, the highest ever in history.
The ministry has warned that the poor eyesight can be linked to the increased time spent staring at screens caused by smartphone usage and mobile games.
