OpenAI Launches o3-mini AI Reasoning Model

OpenAI launch a new AI reasoning model named o3-mini on Friday. In December, OpenAI had showcased the reasoning model alongside the o3 model.
Earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had announced that the o3-mini model would be released within a couple of weeks.
In a post on X, Sam Altman announced the launch of the o3-mini model and called it “smart and fast model.” He said that it can search the web and shows its thinking. It is available to free-tire users and can be accessed by clicking the reason button.
Altman said that the o3-mini model is available in ChatGPT and its API services. He also said that ChatGPT Plus users can select “o3-mini-high”, which thinks harder and gives better answers.
OpenAI announced the new o3-mini AI model as part of its 12-day “shipmas” event. It is capable of reasoning through complex tasks and can solve more challenging problems than previous models in science, coding, and math, said the company.
“We’re releasing OpenAI o3-mini, the newest, most cost-efficient model in our reasoning series, available in both ChatGPT and the API today. Previewed in December 2024, this powerful and fast model advances the boundaries of what small models can achieve, delivering exceptional STEM capabilities—with particular strength in science, math, and coding—all while maintaining the low cost and reduced latency of OpenAI o1-mini,” OpenAI said.
OpenAI’s o3-mini model
OpenAI o3-mini is a reasoning model that supports developer features including function calling, structured outputs, and developer messages, making it production-ready out of the gate. Like OpenAI o1-mini and OpenAI o1-preview, o3-mini will support streaming.
Developers can choose between three reasoning effort options—low, medium, and high—to optimize for their specific use cases. The rate limit for Plus and Team users tripled from 50 messages per day with o1-mini to 150 messages per day with o3-mini.
ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users can access OpenAI o3-mini starting today, with Enterprise access coming in February. Free plan users can also try OpenAI o3-mini by selecting ‘Reason’ in the message composer or by regenerating a response, said OpenAI.
