Sony is reportedly developing a portable console that allows a user to play PlayStation 5 from anywhere.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the portable console is being developed to compete with Nintendo in the portable gaming market. The console is also set to compete with Microsoft’s Xbox as it is currently working on prototypes in the same category but the Sony’s portable console is “likely years away from launch”, if at all Sony wants to release it, stated the report.
Nintendo leads the handheld gaming industry and it is expected to launch the successor to its Switch console next year. Microsoft is reportedly planning an Xbox handheld console but the official release is still a few years away. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer told Bloomberg that Xbox is interested in getting into the handheld gaming market. He confirmed that Microsoft is currently working on the prototype.
The portable market is not new to Sont as they have already launched PS Vita, which has been discontinued.
Sony launched the PlayStation Portal in 2023 that wirelessly streams PS5 games from the cloud but as per bloomberg’s report, the eight-inch gaming device was meant to function as a standalone device.
The new portable console will allow games to be played natively and it is expected to make games more accessible.
