Chennai: As allegations of match-fixing returned to haunt the tennis world on Monday, it was inevitable that the Chennai Open, India’s only ATP event for the last two decades, also got ensnared in the web. When an obscure Daniel Koellerer was banned for life for match-fixing in 2011, the Austrian not only opened a can of worms, but also put the Chennai Open under the scanner in an interview.
“In Chennai, they offered me $50,000 to lose to Nikolay Davydenko in the first round and in Paris, they offered me double the money to lose in straight sets and also a bigger amount than $50,000 against Tipsarevic in Moscow. I didn’t even think about fixing the match and taking the money,” he had told BBC.
