Bus carrying Sabarimala pilgrims overturns in Wayanad
A bus carrying over 50 Sabarimala pilgrims from Karnataka overturned early this morning on the narrow Tirunelli Thettu Road in Wayanad's Thirunelli. The accident occurred around 6 am as the bus lost control and flipped across the road. While several passengers sustained injuries, initial reports indicate that none are critically hurt.
Rescue efforts were quickly initiated by fellow travelers and local residents, with police and fire service personnel joining shortly after. The injured were transported to Mananthavady Medical College for treatment using available vehicles.
The incident highlights growing concerns about unsafe driving practices by buses and minibuses carrying pilgrims during the Sabarimala season. Reports suggest many vehicles speed through the Thamarassery Ghat, often flouting traffic rules in their rush to complete multiple trips. This reckless behavior, even with children onboard, has sparked calls for stricter enforcement of road safety measures.
Residents and passengers propose stopping vehicles from other states, particularly Karnataka, at the ghat entrance to educate drivers on safety regulations. While implementing awareness programs may pose challenges, there is increasing demand for stronger oversight to prevent such accidents in the future.
