Washington: Several Twitter users have condemned the anti-Trump demonstrators who carried a sign board, stating 'Rape Melania' to protest outside the President-elect’s hotel in Washington D.C. on Sunday night.

The picture from the protest site caught the attention of the Twitter users when the "offensive" phrase against US President-elect Donald Trump's wife Melania started trending on the social media platform on Sunday night.

While several Twitter users condemned the protesters, the social media giant was also slammed for letting ‘offensive’ ‘Rape Melania’ phrase trend.

According to a report in The Washington Post, Twitter said that the phrase was trending because users denounced it, not because they supported sexual assault.
