Waves exceeding 1 meter hit the coastline of Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the region.

Hyderabad: An earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 struck north-central Japan on Monday, as reported by the public broadcaster NHK.

Following the seismic activity, the Japan Meteorological Agency promptly issued a tsunami warning for the coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures.

Concerns are heightened as tsunamis reaching heights of up to 5 meters are anticipated in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, according to the weather agency. Reports from NHK indicate that waves exceeding 1 meter in height have already impacted the coastline of Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture.

In response to the earthquake, Hokuriku Electric Power has initiated checks for any irregularities at its nuclear power plants, as conveyed by NHK.
