Hong Kong actor faces backlash after racist Indian parody of viral PPAP song
Wong's video, titled Indian auntie, is full to the brim with negative stereotypes on Indian community.
Hon Kong: Hong Kong based actor Derek Wong is facing a huge backlash on the internet after he posted a ‘racist’ Indian parody of viral hit song ‘Pen Pineapple Apple Pen.’
The video, in two segments, shows the actor in a sari and painted brown face, dancing to modified lyrics of the song loaded with negative stereotypes, in a badly attempted Indian accent.
He then proceeds to scream ‘Indian auntie’, pulls up his sari, and starts rubbing his legs suggestively.
In the second segment of the video, another attempted parody of the same song. The ‘Indian auntie’ is now shown rushing to the loo after eating a sumptuous meal of Chicken curry and mango lassi. “Chicken curry, mango lassi. Eugh! Don't be afraid to shit yourself after drinking lassi,” chimes the song in the background.
Wong later on followed up his bizarre and racist videos with another video titled Indian auntie, where he speaks about his take on Bollywood. He also reportedly said in the video caption that he learnt his Indian accent from his Indian friends in the US.
The video, that was uploaded by a local ‘anti-migrant’ paper in its Facebook page has drawn much criticism for its portrayal of the Indian community.
“This is flipping racist. Please understand brownface is a aggressive racist act. Or shall I say, please stop living in the 1940s and come back to 2016,” on user wrote, while others expressed wonder at how someone so familiar with racism issues abroad could make such a video.
