NEW DELHI: The Delhi police has beefed up security near the Israeli embassy and Chabad House, apart from other Jewish establishments in the national capital, following alerts from the intelligence agencies in the wake of the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyehin Tehran.

The security agencies in Delhi are on high alert, as they don’t want India to turn into a battleground after the killing of the Hamas leader and his bodyguard. Sources in the Delhi police said that they do not want to risk a repeat February 2012 incident wherein the wife of an Israeli embassy diplomat was wounded when there was a bomb explosion in the car. One Israeli embassy staff member, along with two bystanders, was also wounded in the explosion.

“We have already provided security to Jewish installations in Delhi, but after the recent developments, we do not want any country to use our soil for their proxy war. Hence, we are keeping a strict vigil to counter any untoward incident," said a Delhi police official.

According to sources, senior Delhi police officers have held a meeting to plan a massive security net around the Israeli establishments in the national capital.

A senior officer said that multi-layered security has already been put in place, with several CCTV cameras installed around both structures. More personnel may be deployed, if required, the officer said.

On Thursday, the Delhi police had to issue a clarification after an "explosions outside the Israeli embassy" hoax was circulated on X. The police said it was fake news. The post was also deleted later.

Security around the Israel embassy was increased after a war between Israel and Hamas broke out in October last year.

In the past three years, two low-intensity blasts have taken place near the Israeli embassy in the national capital. In December last year, a low-intensity blast took place near the embassy. Earlier in January 2021, a minor IED blast took place outside the Israeli embassy. No one was injured in either attack. However, some cars were damaged.
