India Refrains from Joint Statement at Ukraine Peace Summit

New Delhi: India sent a clear message at the Western-backed Peace Summit in Switzerland, stating that resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict requires "sincere and practical engagement" between the two parties. India, represented by MEA secretary (West) Pavan Kapoor, chose not to associate with any communique or document from the summit, which concluded on Sunday. The Indian delegation attended the opening and closing plenary sessions of the summit.

In its statement, New Delhi stated its consistent approach of facilitating a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. "We continue to believe that such a resolution requires a sincere and practical engagement between the two parties to the conflict. India will remain engaged with all stakeholders to contribute to an early and lasting peace," the statement read.

India's stance underscores its belief that peace cannot progress without involving Russia in the process. The country has maintained close ties with both Russia and Ukraine and advocates for a resolution through dialogue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently reiterated India's position during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 Summit in Italy. Modi affirmed India's commitment to a peaceful solution, emphasising a human-centric approach through dialogue and diplomacy.

President Zelenskyy had acknowledged India's participation, highlighting the diverse international representation at the Peace Summit. The event gathered nearly100 nations and international organisations.
