The Metropolitan Police were called to Shaftesbury Avenue in Covent Garden at 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday after reports of a collision and a car driving on the wrong side of the road. Four pedestrians were injured, with one in critical condition.
Investigators believe the suspect had been involved in an altercation at a nightclub shortly before getting into his car and driving onto the pavement. The incident has been confirmed as isolated and not linked to terrorism.
Forensic officers are examining the scene near the Gielgud Theatre, with police cordons in place around Archer Street and Great Windmill Street, encompassing the Windmill Soho nightclub and nearby venues. Bloodstains were visible on the pavement, drawing the attention of tourists in the area.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy stated, “Officers responded quickly, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes. Detectives are progressing inquiries rapidly as part of this investigation.”
Police have urged anyone with information to contact them on 101.
