Pakistani woman smuggled drugs to UAE for money to treat cancer
The woman told the judge that she was diagnosed with cancer and did not have enough money for her treatment.
Sharjah: A 57-year-old Pakistan-origin woman who was accused of smuggling drugs into UAE, has said that she committed the crime in exchange for money so that she could fund her cancer treatment.
According to a report in the Khaleej Times, the woman was arrested at the Sharjah International Airport. Officials said that she was carrying drugs hidden inside her accessories made of beads.
While the case was under trial at the Sharjah court, the woman told the judge that she was diagnosed with cancer and did not have enough money for her treatment.
She further said that that she was approached by a drug trafficker in Pakistan who promised to give her enough money for her treatment if she carried some medicines to Sharjah.
The woman also told the court that the trafficker had arranged for her visa and ticket.
Standing in the courtroom, she cried in pain as she pointed towards her stiff arm in an attempt to show the court that she wasn't lying and was ill.
"I agreed to do that because I am so sick and do not have enough money to pay for medical treatment. I can't even sleep due to severe pain," the woman was quoted as saying.
The court has adjourned the case until November 10.
