Sugandha Garg talks about her unapologetic character in 'Jugni'

Sugandha will be playing the lead role in Shefali Bhushan's upcoming film.

Sugandha Garg, who plays the lead role in Shefali Bhushan’s Jugni, essays a confident, unapologetic woman on screen. She is a liberated woman who follows her heart.

Talking about the role, she says, “Sometimes women feel guilty about the choices they make, they feel that they are hurting other people. But the writer of the film took that guilt away from the story and has shown that women can make choices that make them happy and not necessarily hurt others’ sentiments.”

She adds, “During the script reading sessions I would ask Shefali the same question — how is this girl making her own choices and not feeling guilty about it? The director asked me to watch Bhumika featuring Smita Patil, released 39 years ago. It was so progressive for its time. Even in Jugni, Vaibhavari makes her choices and moves on with grace.”

The plot revolves around a girl who unabashedly enjoys a one-night stand and is not guilty about it. The Dirty Picture, Sugandha says, inspired her for the role.

“For me it was The Dirty Picture that set a precedent in terms of a woman carrying the story forward. Characters such as those make choices and it’s those choices that are carrying forward the story,” she adds.
