Auto Expo 2023: Maruti Suzuki Fronx (Baleno Cross), Jimmy debut, booking open
PUNE: Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest car maker, on Thursday unveiled two new SUVs called Fronx and Jimny with high-end powertrain technologies at the 16th edition of Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi.
With the sporty compact SUV Fronx, which is a Maruti Baleno-based SUV coupe, going on sale by April, the company introduces a new design trend into the country’s SUV segment.
While the sporty compact SUV FRONX is aimed at young trailblazers who want to stand out with its modern SUV design, spirited performance, the Jimny is an SUV for passionate off-roaders who are driven by purpose.
While Jimny’s price announcement is in May, it is likely to cost about Rs 12 lakh.
Bookings for Fronx and Jimny are opening starting today.
The Maruti Fronx, based on the Heartect platform, has a Grand Vitara-inspired front fascia with a large grille flanked by LED daytime running lights. The front bumper houses triple-pod LED headlights housed inside triangular pods. The square-ish fenders get black plastic cladding that adds a rugged look. The rear features slim LED tail lights with a light bar and a silver skid plate.
The Maruti Fronx will be available with two engine options. These include a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 99 BHP and 147 Nm and a 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 89 BHP and 113 Nm. Customers will get a choice of a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic and an AMT.
Maruti’s India-specific Jimny 5-door looks well-proportioned and has short front and rear overhangs with approach and departure angles of 30-degrees and 50-degrees, respectively.
Inside, the Jimny gets a rather busy-looking dashboard. It has a 3-spoke steering wheel and a conventional twin-pod analogue instrument cluster. The centre console houses a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
The Jimny will be offered in two variants: Zeta and Alpha, with features like automatic LED headlamps, electric ORVMs, automatic climate control and cruise control. The SUV also gets 6-airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, a rearview camera and a brake-limited slip differential.
The Jimny will be available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 103 BHP and 134.2 Nm. The engine is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission and Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro all-wheel drive system.
“We are delighted to present two new SUVs today, the new sporty compact SUV Fronx that will set the trend for a shape of new SUVs in the country and the much-awaited Jimny with its legendary off-road prowess will be greeted with the same enthusiasm as our much-loved SUVs, Grand Vitara and Brezza,” Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO at Maruti Suzuki India, said.
