Mercedes posts strongest-ever half yearly sales

PUNE: Mercedes Benz, India’s biggest German luxury car maker, on Tuesday posted 13 per cent year-on-year sales growth in January to June period at 8,528 units, its best-ever half-yearly sales in the country.

The Pune-based automaker had sold 7,537 units in the same period last year.

It has also recorded the best-ever sales in the second June quarter at 3,831 units, growing 8 per cent as against the sales of 3,551 units in the Q2 in 2022.

There was very high demand for top-end vehicles priced above Rs 1.5 crore in the first half year at 2,000 units, a growth of 54 per cent.

“One out of four Mercedes cars sold in the first half belonged to the top end vehicle segment,” the company said.

“This record sales performance is driven by the high desirability of the brand, an attractive portfolio, increased availability of cars, and successful implementation of the ‘Retail of the Future’ business model,” said Santosh Iyer, MD at Mercedes Benz India.

He said the brand’s focus remains on elevating the customer experience and continuing to grow the top-end vehicles, which outpaces other segments.

“We are excited about the remaining quarters, having lined up some of the most-awaited luxury vehicles for our customers, starting with the new-generation GLC,” Iyer said.

While the popular key models drove the sales growth in the first-half of this year, the brand posted 53 per cent year-on-year growth for its ultra-luxury vehicles and sporty AMG models.

Mercedes said the E-Class LWB continued to be the single highest-selling model for the brand, whereas the GLE became the best-selling SUV in the first-half of this year, followed by the GLA.

It said the GLS, AMG G 63, S-Class, Maybach GLS, and Maybach S-Class were also in demand as also the all-new C-Class made a significant contribution to the overall sales.

Moreover, the sales of its electric vehicle line-up, especially rising demand for its EQB and EQS, soared 10 times on a low base of last year.

While Mercedes-Benz has already launched a few cars in the first half, it will bring more models to the country in the second half, including the new generation GLC by the third quarter of the year.
