Toyota establishes new engine facility in Bangalore
In order to ramp up production of their new 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel engines, Toyota Industries Engine India (TIEI) has inaugurated a new plant at Jigani Industrial Area, Bangalore. Both these engines have debuted in the new generation Innova Crysta launched last month. The TIEI is a joint venture between Toyota Industries Corporation (Japan) and Kirloskar Systems.
With a whopping investment of Rs 1100 crore, the engine facility is spread across a massive 2.2 acres of land, employs 1200 personnel, and has a capacity to roll out 1.08 lakh units per annum. India becomes the third country after Thailand and Japan to get the Toyota’s Global Diesel engine plant.
Speaking on the occasion, T R Parasuraman, deputy managing director, Toyota Industries Engine India, said, “TIEI aims to become India’s no. 1 engine manufacturing plant by contributing to the country’s manufacturing mandate. We are strongly focused towards the ‘Make in India’ initiative of Government of India and believe that this new engine project will add to achieve global manufacturing standards in the country.”
The Bangalore plant will produce 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre and 2GD-FTV 2.4-litre diesel motors. Compared to the earlier 2KD engines, the former is 71 per cent more powerful and 7 per cent more fuel efficient whereas the latter is 47 per cent more powerful and 13 per cent more fuel efficient. Presently, the engines are BSIV compliant, however, the automaker says that they can be upgraded to BSV or BSVI norms whenever required.
Vice Chairman, Toyota Kirloskar Motor & Director, Toyota Industries Engine India, Vikram S Kirloskar said, “The introduction of GD series engines not only equips superior technology but also meet the new fuel efficiency policies mandate in the country. We realize diesel engine technology will remain an integral part of every automaker with strict fuel efficiency norms being implemented in India, therefore this engine project will strengthen our diesel business in the country marking Toyota's first diesel manufacturing plant in India.”
The recently launched Toyota Innova Crysta is equipped with these engines, which are linked to both manual as well as automatic transmissions. The localised manufacturing of engines will help Toyota cut costs on its cars besides generating employment in the Karnataka state.
