Pune: Eicher Trucks and Buses, a division of VE Commercial Vehicles, has forayed into the electric small commercial vehicle (SCV) segment by launching its pick-up vehicle, the Eicher Pro X Range at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.
For the brand, it is a logical entrance into the lucrative SCM segment, after being well established in the light and medium commercial vehicle market in the country. In December 2024, its sales grew 4 per cent on year to 8,324 vehicles.
The Eicher Pro X is assembled on an all-women assembly line at its Bhopal facility, testament to Eicher’s dedication to fostering diversity and inclusion in manufacturing. It has an installed capacity to produce 40,000 units per year.
“With our Pro X Range, we are entering into the rapidly growing 2-3.5-ton segment, which is the biggest in the commercial vehicle segment,” Vinod Aggarwal, MD &CEO at VE Commercial Vehicles told Financial Chronicle.
He said last year SCV segment sold 3.19 lakh units, valued at about Rs 35,000 crore. In Jan.-Dec., the SCV accounted for 2.43 lakh units, and only 438 electric units were sold.
Eicher will compete with Tata Motors, Mahindra, Leyland, EKA, Euler Motors, Switch Mobility and Omega Seiki Mobility in the country.
“The electric small commercial vehicles are here to grow and that is the future,” Aggarwal said, adding that the company had invested Rs 500 crore to design and develop the Eicher Pro X Range for the Indian market. Another Rs 200 crore were lined up for investment next year.
He said while a similar diesel vehicle would cost Rs 12 per km, the Eicher Pro X Range electric would be cheaper at just Rs 2 per km.
Agarwal said the Eicher Pro X Range has been specifically developed to cater to the unique needs of industries such as e-commerce, FMCG, cold chains, and parcel and courier logistics.
The company also plans to introduce the Diesel version in Aug.- Sept., the CNG version will hit the roads in December 2025.
“Our economy is growing and the fundamentals will push for growth in the SCV segment,” Aggaral said.
He said the Eicher Pro X series of small trucks is tailored for segment-specific requirements, come fully connected with real-time fleet management & uptime support solutions, for addressing unmet needs of the category as well as maximizing profitability.
