Come August, Your iPhone to Be TATA Manufactured!
Come August, the Tata Group, one of the India’s oldest & largest conglomerates will have another feather in its cap. It will become the first Indian manufacturer of the iconic iPhone. This would happen through the acquisition of Wistron Corp. factory, an Apple Inc. Supplier, located in south Karnataka.
The factory is valued around $600 million plus, employs around 10,000 people who assemble here the latest model from the iPhone stable – iPhone 14. The negotiations for the same which have been going on for a year now are in their final stages with few remaining issues to be resolved over next couple of weeks, said people privy to the matter who did not wish to be quoted.
Tata group already manufactures the iPhone chassis, the metal casing of the device at its facility in Tamil Nadu. Tata group, which deals in salt to tech services, harbours the ambition in chip making space and has made recent forays in e-commerce and electronics production.
The addition of an Indian iPhone facility based out of India would give a fillip to both - Apple’s efforts to diversify its product base out of China and Government of India’s Make In India initiative.
