Doubling power capacity is the next challenge: Union minister R K Singh
NEW DELHI: As India gears up to be the world’s largest economy by 2030, Union power and new and renewable energy minister R.K. Singh said doubling the overall power generation capacity in the next seven years is the big challenge for India.
“As India is set to become the third largest economy in the world in the next few years, the country needs more power to electrify the growth,” the minister said, inaugurating the 15th edition of ELECRAMA, the world's largest electrical exhibition, by IEEMA on Saturday at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida.
“We have emerged as the most attractive destination for renewable energy investment and the pace of the RE expansion will continue,” he said.
The power consumption rate is growing every year. Around 1,78,000 MW of capacity has been added since 2014. India has one of the world’s largest integrated grids and the current power production capacity is 410 GW. India will continue to generate power from fossil fuel, he added.
Multiple projects under renewable energy are under construction which will further add a total of 85,000 MW capacity.
The five-day ELECRAMA, which began on Saturday, will showcase the best of Indian Electrical and Allied Electronics Industry.
The event, where close to 1,000 exhibitors are participating, is spread over 1.1 lakh square metre space and about 3,50,000 people are expected to visit the event.
The focus of this edition of ELECRAMA is on creating a platform to showcase products & solutions in new energies; discussion forums on R&D and innovation in new technologies.
