Demonetization of Rs 2000 notes evokes reactions
CHENNAI: The Reserve Bank of India’s announcement to demonetize Rs 2000 currency notes triggered a wide range of reactions with Chief Minister M K Stalin coming up with a tweet: ‘500 doubts, 1000 mysteries, 2000 mistakes. A single trickery to forget the Karnataka debacle’ on Saturday
The tweet that went viral on social media evoked counter responses too. BJP State president K Annamalai said that he liked the Chief Minister’s reaction. Stalin was angry, as evident in the tweet, because his party might have stacked Rs 2000 notes for use in the next elections, he told the media at the airport on his return to Chennai from Coimbatore.
Annamalai, however, said that only banks would not accept Rs 2000 notes after September 30, adding common people can transact business with it among themselves, in shops and other establishments. He also said that Rs 500 notes too would be withdrawn and go out of currency in seven or eight years.
Prohibition Minister V Senthil Balaji, had to come out with a tweet denying the news carried in television channels about wine shops refusing to take Rs 2000 notes as legal tender soon after the announcement was made by the RBI.
He said that no circular had been issued by the department advising shop keepers not to accept Rs 2000 notes as the news items mentioned.
