FACT promotions raise a stink

Decision to promote 10 officials comes four days after CBI raids.

KOCHI: Four days after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted nation-wide raids on officials of Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) including chairman and managing director Jaiveer Sreevastava over allegations regarding irregularities in the sale of gypsum from the company, a high- level panel at the company cleared promotions to several officials allegedly violating seniority.

The proceedings signed by chief general manager (human resources) A.V. Jayakumar shows that 10 officials have been promoted either as deputy general manager, general manager or as chief general manager. The decision in this regard was taken by a meeting chaired by Mr Sreevastava and attended by Mr Jacob Kurien and Mr Sreekumar, two CGMs who retire on October 31, CGM I.S. Ambika who is embroiled in the gypsum deal and Mr Jayakumar. Sources said CGM of FACT Engineering Works (FEW) D. Nandakumar, who objected to such an action taking place after the raids, was kept out of the meeting.

The staff of FACT are understood to be agitated over the decision which overlooked seniority but sources said unions have not come out against it as also Save FACT Forum.

The persons promoted (with promoted post in bracket) are Mr Manuel Zacharias (CGM), K. Asok Kumar K (CGM-FEDO), M.V. Ramakrishnan (GM-construction and projects), N.M. Suresh (GM-corporate materials), Antony John (DGM-Willingdon Island), P.J. Mathew (DGM-energy management), Subhasis Roy (DGM-business development), Ashis A. Nair (DGM-M&PCE-FEDO) and K.B. Biju (DGM-technical service).

The committee also transferred four DGMs Abraham Roy Mathew, C. Radhakrishna Pillai, M. Mohanachandran and P.J. Binny. Meanwhile, Mr Srivastava on Sunday suddenly cancelled a press conference called by him at Ernakulam Press Club. He, however, cited no reasons.
