Tata Power Boosts Odisha’s Electricity Distribution with Rs 4200 Crore Investment

Bhubaneswar: Tata Power, one of India’s leading integrated power companies, is driving transformative changes in electricity distribution across Odisha through its joint ventures with the state government. Operating four distribution companies—TP Central Odisha Distribution, TP Western Odisha Distribution, TP Southern Odisha Distribution, and TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited—the company serves over 9 million customers in the state.

Over the past three years, Tata Power has invested more than Rs 4200 crore to enhance Odisha's power infrastructure, with a focus on expanding the network and fortifying it against cyclones. These efforts have significantly improved electricity supply, benefitting both rural households and the industrial sector. More than 1 million new electricity connections have been established, particularly in underserved rural areas, aiding industrial expansion.

Odisha now enjoys 24x7 electricity supply, with urban areas receiving an average of 23.68 hours of power daily—higher than the national average. Rural areas also fare well, with 21.98 hours of supply, surpassing national norms.

Advanced technologies, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and drone-based surveillance, have bolstered real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance. Smart meters and integrated call centers have further enhanced customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

As a result of these initiatives, Aggregate Transmission and Distribution (AT&C) losses have dropped by 11 percent, reaching an average of 17.79 percent in FY24. A spokesperson attributed this achievement to the company’s robust investments in infrastructure and technology.

The company’s efforts have earned national recognition, with three Odisha Discoms receiving A+ ratings in the 12th Annual Integrated Rating of Power Distribution Utilities. Tata Power’s contributions align with Odisha’s ‘Make in Odisha’ initiative, fostering industrial growth and supporting the state’s vision of becoming a key industrial hub.
