India scores lower than some Asian peers in AI preparedness

Chennai: India stands behind some of the Asian peers, including Indonesia, China and Singapore in terms of preparedness to meet the advent of Artificial Intelligence, finds a report by the IMF.

As per the IMF’ AI Preparedness Index, India recorded 0.49 against 0.52 by Indonesia, 0.64 by China, 0.77 by the US, O.73 by UK and 0.8 by Singapore.

The AI Preparedness Index (AIPI) assesses the level of AI preparedness across 174 countries, based on a set of macro-structural indicators that cover the countries’ digital infrastructure, human capital and labour market policies, innovation and economic integration, and regulation and ethics.

In terms of digital infrastructure, India’s score was 0.11, Indonesia 0.12, China 0.19, the US 0.18, UK 0.18 and Singapore 0.21. For human capital and labour market policies, India scored 0.12 against 0.15 by China, 0.13 by Indonesia, 0.2 by Singapore, 0.17 by UK and 0.18 by the US.

India got 0.11 in innovation and economic integration scores similar to Indonesia, but less than China with 0.15, Singapore with 0.18, UK with 0.16 and the US with 0.18. In terms of regulation and ethics, India had a similar score with China with 0.15, but was behind Singapore with 0.22, Indonesia with 0.16, UK 0.21 and the US 0.22.

The index is based on data from Fraser Institute, International Labour Organization, International Telecommunication Union, United Nations, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Universal Postal Union, World Bank, and World Economic Forum.

According to the IMF, the index should be seen as an indicative measure, guiding policymakers in identifying areas for improvement.
