Schools to ban campus selfies

It was after traffic officials noticed the practice of taking selfies on roads.

KOZHIKODE: In the wake of the increasing tendency of school students to take selfies in public places especially on the roads in school uniform, the District Education Department, on the recommendation of the district traffic department and mental health experts, has decided to completely ban mobile phone with cameras on school campuses.

It was after traffic officials noticed the practice of taking selfies on roads and other places that the recommendation was forwarded.

Reviews by noted child psychiatrists in the District suggest that selfie addiction is a newly termed mental disorder named as ‘Selfitis’, which was at first introduced by the American Psychiatric Association.

To prevent accidents or any kind of issues with selfie addiction, the traffic department will host a series of awareness programmes that includes school to school campaigning and banning of mobiles phones in schools completely.

“Recently three students of a prominent school in the city were warned after being seen taking selfies on a zebra crossing”, said Yusaf, traffic official here.

Similarly many such situations have been reported and the addiction for selfies has been reported as being high by medical experts. “Hence this is the right time to make students aware about the seriousness of a simple thing that they do”, he pointed out.

According to Dr Suresh Kumar, noted Psychiatrist, it is the individual selfie that are the matter of concern rather than the group selfie.
