Hyderabad: The city on Thursday hosted the first night kite festival with four varieties of kites that included LED, inflatable, Tukkal and single line kites.
The festival was organised by the Aga Khan Academy jointly by the TS tourism and culture department. The event also saw the traditional Bathukamma festivities.
“Usually night kites are lit up with candles. This time we we got to see kites with LED lights and lights hanging on the kite,” said city resident K. Vivekananda, who was at the venue.
Naina Jaiswal, table tennis champion was part of the festival. The night flying event was followed by a classical sitar concert. Over 33 internationally ranked kite flyers from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the US and Ukraine joined the local and other Indian kite club competitors.
The festival on day one organised a workshop for children on kite design, making, painting, decoration and photography. Over 600 students from private and government schools took part in the workshop.
Kite 2016 is a festival committed to the cause of girl child education and aspires to build solidarity around this critical issue and generate opportunities for gifted girl children from different socio-economic brackets to access to a world class education, said the Aga Khan Academy.
The organisers took a month to put up this show. They had surveyed the kite festivals in Gujarat and Mumbai before planning the state’s first international kite show.
