Kozhikode: Traders want Corp to renovate toilet
Kozhikode: While hundreds of traders and members of the public of the busy business hub of Palayam, the heart of the city, have been struggling to access toilet facilities, a toilet belonging to the Corporation has been lying abandoned for decades at New Bazar in Moidheenpalli road in the city.
The toilet facility sans any power supply, maintenance and water connection has become a den for drunkards, drug abusers and anti-social elements, allege traders. More than 900 shops are functioning around the toilet and salesmen and women have to depend on toilets far away at SM Street.
Malabar Development Council president CE Chakkunni, a trader in the area told DC that the toilet was functioning well when he started business in the early 1960s.
“We have been demanding from the Corporation to give us the right to renovate and operate the toilet after conducting proper maintenance. We have approached the Corporation authorities many times earlier, but are yet to receive an official nod”, he added.
“There is no compound wall for the area and now it also has become a waste dumping yard, posing the threat of a fire outbreak”, he pointed out.
Corporation mayor VKC Mammadkoya told DC that he would look into the issue and take necessary steps. A team from the Corporation would visit the place and would discuss with the traders on how to renovate and maintain the toilet, he added.
