BBMP to collect waste from bulk generators
BENGALURU: In order to regulate garbage collection from bulk generators and to ensure that it is processed scientifically, the BBMP plans to collect garbage on its own and send it to the waste plants for composting or for waste to energy facilities.
BBMP Special Commissioner Subodh Yadav (Solid Waste Management) told Deccan Chronicle that a technical committee headed by Engineer-in-Chief (EiC) has been set up to study revenue expenditure on collection and transportation of garbage to the waste processing facility. However, the existing empanelled contractors would continue to collect garbage from bulk generators.
The technical committee comprising six members will study the expenditure incurred for collection and transportation of garbage to waste processing facilities. Later, bulk generators will be charged accordingly. Besides, they will be given an option of transporting the waste to the waste processing facility and pay only the processing fee. Currently, the bulk generators are paying Rs 4 per kg to the empanelled vendors, he said.
The committee is expected to give its report by first week of February. The purpose of the committee is to provide alternatives to bulk generators and to weed out those empanelled contractors, who do not have proper facility to process the waste, Yadav said.
The increase in the number of black spots, mostly on the city outskirts, reveals that empanelled bulk generators are reportedly not performing as expected. Actually, the committee is armed with most of the information. The new pricing and an alternative would help about 8,000 bulk generators, Yadav added.
According to an estimate, about 150 to 200 Metric Tonnes (MT) of waste is being dumped at the outskirts of the city, thereby affecting these residing nearby. According to a rough estimate about 500 MT of waste is collected from the bulk generators. Of this about 300 MT are getting processed at various small units of processing units set up by the vendors, said sources.
Who are bulk generators?
Apartments with 50 units and those establishments, including commercial, which generate 10 kg of waste have been categorised as bulk generators and they are expected to process garbage on their own or send it through the empanelled garbage vendors
