Visakhapatnam: Suspense continues over jumbling system

Distraught parents of Inter students left in the lurch

Visakhapatnam: The uncertainty shrouded over the jumbling system of intermediate practical examinations has kept the parents of the students on tenterhooks.

Given that there is weightage of intermediate marks for scoring a rank in premier exams such as IIT JEE, Eamcet and others, which are often said to be the lifeline for state students, they demand the government to do away with its proposal, at least for this year.

Citing undue favouritism and erring institutions, Prof. Dayaratnam committee pitched for the jumbling system back in 2005 in undivided Andhra Pradesh. But it was never implemented even after several feasibility studies.

In December 2015, the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE), upon approval of the state government, instructed all colleges about the execution of the jumbling system.

Over the months, the BIE has even identified about 710 centres to conduct jumbling practical examinations and even readied hall tickets, which is now patiently waiting for the government’s response.

Speaking to this correspondent, N.V. Rama Krishna, parent of a student, said that the new jumbling system would severely hamper the prospects of the state students.

“Even a single mark difference can widen the gulf between the state students and others. Many colleges are not equipped with the stipulated apparatus or equipment. Even the Telangana government cancelled the jumbling system considering the due importance of inter- marks. Right from IIT-JEE, Eamcet, NIT exams to admission into major universities, everything is based on inter-marks,” Mr Rama Krishna said.

On Tuesday, HRD minister chaired a meeting with the BIE officials and a detailed discussion took place about the new system.

On the other the hand, the private colleges association gave a representation to the Chief Minister to keep the decision in abeyance.

When asked about the jumbling system, Regional Inspection Officer of BIE, P. Nagesh Kumar, informed that they are awaiting for the final call from the government’s side.

“Everything is set ready for practical exams. Based on the government’s decision over the implementation of the jumbling system, we could go ahead. We are expecting the decision in a couple of days,” he added.
