New 500-bed boys hostel to come up in OU: Sabitha

HYDERABAD: Osmania University will be able to accommodate 500 engineering students more in a new hostel in some time. Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy laid the foundation stone for the construction of the hostel on the university campus, in the presence of Minister Mohd. Mahmood Ali, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dandeboina Ravinder and Ravula Sridhar Reddy, Chairman of the Telangana State Education Women and Infrastructure Development Corporation.

The hostel will fulfil the need of outstation students coming to the university to study engineering, she said. She said she was surprised to know that 70 per cent of students in higher education were girls.

She said the government was supporting the setting up of the Palamur University at Mahbubnagar, the Women’s University and the Forest University.

The new hostel, which would have a ground floor and three floors, would cost ₹39.50 crore. This building will be built on 1.59 acres of the OU College of Engineering premises, with 133 rooms spread over 21,377 sq. ft on each floor. In addition, it will have 4,596-sq. ft dining block that can serve 237 at a time.

Prof. Ravinder said that his 21-point agenda, which he is working from the time of his appointment, focused on academic initiatives, changes in the curriculum, introducing courses, improving the admission process and encouraging teachers towards research.

Minister Mohd. Mahmood Ali said the new hostel was the need of the hour as the old hostel buildings were in a dilapidated condition.
