Space crunch hinders studies at Amberpet school

HYDERABAD: Students of the Government Girls High School in Amberpet are worried a lot about their studies, as a paucity of space has rendered 103 students of the school, seated in just five classrooms (Classes 6-10), unable to follow their lessons.

The school, which has a metal shed for a roof, is divided by five pillars, with each separated from the shed atop by two feet. The school has six rooms, one of which serves as a staffroom, but none of these rooms has a door.

Students say that they can easily overhear the lessons going on in two or three other classrooms. “We do get distracted with the oral drilling going on in other classes, but we go on nevertheless,” a student said.

Another student said that they can see the classroom located diagonal to hers. “What's worse is that a tree runs dangerously through the metal roof that many fear could give in any time, especially during the windy rains,” she said.

Vandhana Sharma, the principal of the school, blamed a court case for the situation. “We're fine with the place at the moment. Since we're not a primary school, we don't even have to worry about too much noise. Until instructed otherwise, we have no choice but to stay here. We haven't had much of an issue to date,” she told Deccan Chronicle.

However, she could not provide details of the case.

Teachers also said they had no reason to complain. “No student or parent has ever complained about this situation,” a teacher said, citing good washrooms and uninterrupted power, as they were the only issues that previously hindered students.

An area resident said: “The school, as I heard, was actually somebody's home that was made into a school with these walls, probably only for a temporary period. But, it has continued for this long,”

Students, however, had a different story to tell and were especially fearful of the impending monsoon, as Amberpet was among the worst-hit areas during the last monsoon.
