Govt dental college ‘throws out’ 46 girl students from hostel

HYDERABAD: Forty six female students from the Government Dental College in Afzalgunj, who were about to begin internship, with a year's academics still to go, were unceremoniously thrown out of their rooms, leading to a decision
to protest on the college premises on Thursday.

A bigger shocker was that all 12 rooms in the hostel at Koti, where they were staying, were broken open and their belongings thrown out. The final year students are from Siddipet, Kurnool, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Ongole, Nellore, Anantapur, Bihar and Rajasthan.

According to the hostel officials, the college management had to resort to this step as it had to accommodate 31 first-year students, who had been staying in a hall due to lack of accommodation in the hostel. The officials said they had issued a notice to the final year hostellers a month ago.

The students lamented that this could delay their internship.

“Now, we have to look for accommodation in private hostels near our college
which is not easy. It is a ridiculous step as till now all were permitted to stay in hostels until the internship,” said students requesting anonymity.

Meanwhile, first year students told this correspondent that they were manipulated by the principal although they had assured to adjust with the senior students.

“The principal forced two representatives from each year to sign a blank paper, which he used to force interns to vacate their rooms,” first-year students alleged.

Ironically, this ‘rule’ applies only to female students. This is despite the fact that boys’ pay a modest monthly rent of Rs 500 rent whereas girls have to pay Rs 1,200 for rent and an additional Rs 2,700 for food following a revision last September.

“It is ironical that we have paid our hostel fee and mess charges till March,” they pointed out.

“The principal refused to sign bonafide certificates, ID cards and memos until the time the junior interns vacate their rooms. A refundable amount of Rs 5,000 is not returned citing development of hostels, though there has been zero development,” said senior interns.
