Call for start of PG courses in astrology in Potti Sriramulu Telugu varsity
Vijayawada: A plea has been made to start post-graduation courses in astrology, dance, music, theater, fine arts, folk arts etc in Potti Sriramulu Telugu University in Andhra Pradesh.
There is a huge demand for priests to fix auspicious time for laying the foundation stone or inauguration of major projects and for family matters. Those who are practising astrology as per family tradition will come up to share their knowledge as also to improve their knowledge by studying the subject in the university.
Astrologers who are practising it as per family tradition are popular in several parts of Godvari districts and they go even to far off places like Mumbai to fix good 'muhurtas' for the start of major projects.
Lack of availability of such courses in Telugu University is making several students, mainly from traditional families, to move to Bengaluru, Varanasi etc to undergo training from the astrologers and practise them back home.
Youngsters from traditional families eking out their livelihood by practising traditional dance, music, folk arts, theatre etc want such courses to be introduced in Telugu Univeristy campus at Rajamahendravaram. At present, it is offering only Telugu language in PG, MPhil and PhD courses. So is the case with Adikavi Nannaya university that is offering only Telugu language for study.
In the aftermath of bifurcation of AP in 2014, the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University’s main campus in Hyderabad and the other campus in Warangal have gone under the control of Telangana government. Its campuses located in Rajamahendravaram, Kuchipudi and Srisailam are now under the control of the present AP government.
Local astrologers, artists and students have appealed to the state government to start the PG courses mentioned above in Rajamahendravaram, as it is known as the cultural capital of the state.
A senior official from Potti Sriramulu Telugu University in AP said, “It would be better to bifurcate the Telugu university between AP and TS as per norms of the Split Act so that our campuses can be strengthened with support from the government and we can start new courses.”
Meanwhile, the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Telangana authorities are also awaiting a division of the university between AP and TS as early as possible.
Its vice chancellor Prof T Krishna Rao said, “We are ready to accommodate students especially from AP to pursue PG courses like astrology, music, dance etc at out campus in Hyderabad without any sort of discrimination by dint of region.”
