The rise of Kanika Kapoor
“Hyderabad reminds me of home,” says Lucknow-based Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor, who was in the city to perform at a concert. The Baby Doll singer has fond memories of Hyderabad. She says, “Although I have visited Hyderabad only a few times, I can relate to the culture, food and even the way of living here —especially Old City,” she says.
Kanika could soon be singing a Telugu song, but she says, “I can’t say much, the details will be divulged soon.” From a YouTube sensation in 2012 to a household name today, Kanika has come a long way. But, she never thought Baby Doll would be so successful.
“Living in London, for years I used to follow everybody in the music industry here. However, I never thought I would be here one day and have people following me,” she adds. “Every song I sang including Lovely, Chitiyan Kalaiyan or Kamlee became huge chartbusters. I feel blessed,” she says.
Having trained in classical music for over 12 years, she continues to follow the lessons imparted to her by her guru, Late Pandit Ganesh Prasad Mishra. “He told me, ‘Never sing like others, stay real.’ That stuck with me and continues to inspire me. I feel I have no competition. I’m someone who is usually happy for people and don’t feel jealous about their success,” she says.
Kanika has sung for two upcoming movies including Udta Punjab and Do Lafzon Ki Kahani. “Both these songs are quite different from the kind of songs people usually associate with me. While the song in Udta Punjab is very earthy, the one in Do Lafzon Ki Kahani is Sufi,” she says.
Blessed with great looks, it’s not surprising that Kanika has been receiving a lot of movie offers. “I’m open to the idea of acting. But I want to weigh my options and choose a film which is special,” she informs.
