It feels great that despite being a nobody, I've lasted this long'
Kangana Ranaut has come a long way from being a total outsider in the film world — not only has she carved a niche for herself with her acting prowess, she has now turned producer, a befitting response to those who put hurdles in the way of her achieving her dreams. Tiku Weds Sheru, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur, is Kangana’s debut production under her home banner. The multi-talented Kangana responded to a volley of questions at the trailer launch of the film.
On the outsider connect
Tiku Weds Sheru revolves around the struggles of aspiring actors who come to Mumbai only to end up getting side roles in movies. We have gone through the grind — auditions in shady offices, and having to negotiate the underbelly of B’Town. But we didn’t lose heart, as we wanted to fulfil our dream of being part of this industry. Interpreting stories as a producer, coming out with meaningful projects and being able to strike the right chord with the audiences — that’s what I was looking for.
On giving new talent an opening
Giving fresh talent a chance in this film took me back to my own days as an outsider, and revived memories of my debut. It’s a great feeling, being an outsider, and bringing incredible talent to the fore, finding stories to present to the entire nation. It feels incredible that despite being a nobody I have lasted for so many years, and gained the love of fans for my craft.
On how Tiku Weds Sheru happened
I debuted in 2004. I feel as if I am debuting again. This film is very special to me. It was launched a while ago. Irfan Sir and I were to do this film which was originally titled Divine Lovers.’ But my director fell sick. He came to me again after a few years and we had to bring a Kangana who was 10 years younger, and dreamed of being part of B-wood. We had to look for a fresh face and we brought in Avneet as the female lead.
On roping in Nawazuddin
I was told that Nawaz Sir would not do films for another five years. I took his number and messaged him while he was in Bengaluru. I went to him and offered him my script but he didn’t even read it. He just agreed to do the film. I think all creative people have a little bit of ‘crazy’ in them and he saw that in me. He must have realised that I am completely mad, and decided to do the film with me.
On her camaraderie with Nawaz
I have known Nawaz through his acting for many years. We are friends. We don’t talk every day, but whenever we need to. We are in a comfortable zone. He shares innumerable jokes with me. So while shooting serious scenes I would keep away from him, fearing I would burst into laughter because of his jokes. One gets to learn a lot, being around him. I wish we get to work together and share the screen.
