MAMI succumbs to pressure, drops Pakistani film from its schedule
Mumbai: After the Jio MAMI Mumbai Festival announced its plan of screening Pakistani film ‘Jago Hua Savera’ under the special section called ‘Restored Classics Section’, a Mumbai-based NGO filed a complaint against it for going ‘against the national sentiment’.
The NGO President, Prithvi Maske, even threatened to stage protest against the festival. The organising body has now decided to drop the film from their list of movies scheduled for screening. In a statement, MAMI organisers revealed, “Given the current situation, the Jio MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival with Star has decided not to programme 'Jago Hua Savera' as part of the Restored Classics Section."
‘Jago Hua Savera’, shot in the then-East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), was Pakistan’s official entry to the 1960 Oscars. The film revolves around the aims and aspirations of fishermen.
