Padmavati protests may be brief
Hyderabad: Distribution rights for controversy-ridden much-awaited Padmavati have been bought by distributor Janardhan KFC for an advance of '3 crore from producer Y. Com.
The producer has bought the satellite rights for himself. The film releases on January 25 in the midst of a long weekend. Given the objections the film went through before being cleared, distributors anticipate protests at the theatres on the first two days of opening. Multiplexes, however, have shown no reluctance in screening it, barring a few theatres located in sensitive zones. The state government has maintained silence about the movie.
A source told this newspaper, “Padmavati will be released on January 25 as per the original schedule in Telangana. Recently, Goshamahal BJP MLA Raja Singh had asked four theatres around his constituency not to screen the film, and threatened that if they did so there would be a protest from Rajput Karnis.
In response to the protest call, in-charge commissioner of Hyderabad police V. V. Srinivas said, “If the government decides to go ahead Hyderabad police will facilitate the screening.”
