If I wanted to make money, I'd have made 5 Munna Bhai films by now: Rajkumar Hirani

Though 15 and 12 years old respectively, Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai are still some of India’s most-loved films. Director Rajkumar Hirani, who has managed to execute both projects flawlessly, is taking his time preparing for the third instalment of the franchise.

“Since the first two films were both huge hits, I want the third to be equally good,” he says.The director is certainly not interested in just making money. He has a vision that he wants to bring to life. “If you just want to cash in on the popularity of a franchise, make anything and people will go and watch it, at least initially. If I wanted to make money, I would have made five Munna Bhai’s by now. I don’t want to do that. I have a story in mind and it’s exciting,” he says.

Hirani had announced that the next film in the Munna Bhai series would be called Munna Bhai Chale America, but he has apparently changed his mind about taking Munna and Circuit to the States. “We have dropped the America plan. The film will be based in India,” he confirms.
