Emergency draws cheers, jeers

Vikramaditya Motwane-directed documentary divulges some unreleased rare footage of the tumultuous period in India

Celebrated director Vikramaditya Motwane seems to be basking in the glow of his documentary, Indi(r)a’s Emergency which was screened at the Jio MAMI film festival in Mumbai on Saturday. People stood in long queues to grab a seat and watch the much-awaited documentary that delves into the tumultuous period during the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The documentary coupled with bone-chilling animations was met with jeering, cheers, whistles, and claps from the crowd.

During the Q&A session with Varun Grover, Motwane said that the process of making the documentary film was tedious.

“We went through each and every book, article, bibliography, research, and screenwriting to create a documentary like this. Our archival producers went out of their way to find the appropriate footage.” The wall-to-wall music and top-notch animation sent chills down the spine. Vikramaditya is keen to release the documentary in various languages. “It is significant to convey stories of such importance, and the method of footage, animation, voiceover, and writing is quite entertaining,” he explained.

Vikramaditya was convoyed by his friend director Anurag Kashyap, and his production team who wasted no time in showcasing their efforts and hard work behind the scenes through words and action.
