BTS Goes Fully Global After AMA 2026

The AMAs were equally defined by the rise of a newer generation. Forbes highlighted the breakout dominance of KATSEYE, as they swept all three of their nominations, including New Artist of the Year.

Hyderabad: The 52nd American Music Awards, 2026, which was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and hosted by Queen Latifah, clearly reflected how rapidly pop culture is evolving.

The biggest headline of the night was undeniably BTS, as the group made a massive comeback by winning the Artist of the Year for the second time in their career, along with Song of the Summer with SWIM, the Billboard Hot 100 topping lead single from their recent album ARIRANG. They also bagged the Best Male K-pop Artist award, proving their fanbase remains one of the strongest cultural forces in the industry.

The AMAs were equally defined by the rise of a newer generation. Forbes highlighted the breakout dominance of KATSEYE, as they swept all three of their nominations, including New Artist of the Year. During one emotional acceptance speech, the group thanked BTS for “paving the way,” a moment that instantly became one of the ceremony’s most talked-about clips online.

Sabrina Carpenter solidified her position as full-fledged pop powerhouse, as her album Man’s Best Friend won Album of the Year, while also securing Best Female Pop Artist and Best Pop Album. The wins confirmed that Carpenter is no longer merely having a “breakout year”, rather she is now one of the defining faces of mainstream pop.

Meanwhile, the cultural impact of Netflix’s Kpop Demon Hunters continues to shine through, as the main theme song “Golden”, performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, won Song of the Year and Best Pop Song. Forbes described it as yet another milestone in the expanding crossover between animation, streaming culture and mainstream pop music.

Indie artist Sombr quietly emerged as one of the ceremony’s biggest success stories with three awards, including Best Rock/Alternative Song for “Back to Friends.” The victories reflected how alternative and internet-driven artists are increasingly competing on equal footing with chart giants.

This year's AMAs saw a good mix of the expected and the unexpected, as the internet sensation Zara Larsson won the Breakthrough Album of the Year and her collaboration with Pink Pantheress on the song “Stateside”, which took the internet by storm, secured the Collaboration of the Year. Despite entering the ceremony with the highest number of nominations, Taylor Swift surprisingly left without a win.

The ceremony also leaned heavily into nostalgia. Reunions and throwback performances from acts like Black Eyed Peas, The Pussycat Dolls and New Kids on the Block gave the night an almost early-2000s atmosphere, while rock icon Billy Idol received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 2026 AMAs ultimately felt less like an American music ceremony and more like a preview of where pop culture is heading next, at the centre of which, stood BTS, not just as winners, but as proof that global pop has fully rewritten the rules of American music.

As the event aired on the Memorial Day holiday, the show also included the 2026 AMAs Salute initiative where they partnered with 11 military and veteran service organisations, like the USO, Congressional Medal of Honour Society and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
