Real Star Upendra on Why his Movie A Was Blockbuster

Upendra attributed the film’s unique appeal to its innovative screenplay and psychological depth

In an exclusive conversation with Deccan Chronicle, Real Star Upendra, a celebrated figure in the Kannada film industry, shared insights about the much-anticipated re-release of his cult classic, “A.” The film is all set to debut in 4K in Telugu. Uppi (as he’s fondly called by fans), who was in Hyderabad, reflected on the timeless appeal of the film.

On the Re-Release of “A”

While expressing his gratitude over the re-release, Upendra emphasised that persistent demand from fans and distributors made this happen. “This is not my thought. This is the distributors’ thought,” he said, acknowledging the film’s successful re-release in Kannada. “The film ran to packed theatres for three weeks upon its re-release in Kannada, and many people kept asking me, especially from the Telugu states, to release “A” in Telugu. Now, we have got an opportunity to release the movie again.”

The Appeal of “A”

Upendra attributed the film’s unique appeal to its innovative screenplay and psychological depth. “The feedback I got was that it was ahead of its time, with a back-and-forth screenplay and a deep, psychological love story between the hero and heroine,” he explained. Uppi can’t wait to see how the new generation would react to the film and hopes they wouldn't find it too ahead of their time.

Casting Chandini

On casting Chandini, who plays the female lead in the film, Uppi says, “My friend Manohar met her in America and suggested I try her for the role. She liked the narration. She did a great job in the movie,” he reminisces.

Marketing “A” for Intelligent Audiences

“A” was marketed with the tagline “A is for intelligent people only.” When asked about it, Upendra says he believed the fast-paced, complex screenplay required an intelligent audience. “I thought people are very intelligent, more than the makers sometimes,” he said, noting how viewers would return to the theater to grasp the film’s nuances fully.

Philosophical Undertones

Commenting on the philosophical themes in “A”, particularly its exploration of love, Uppi said, “The movie questions the existence of love and whether it is truly unconditional. Finally, the heroine proves that love is unconditional, which is what I tried to portray.”

Uppi’s Unique Filmography

Famous for his unconventional storytelling and unique movie titles, Upendra has been a trendsetter in the industry. "From then till now, I have always taken the risk of telling stories in a different way, which people liked," he stated.

Legacy of “A”

The actor believes the film’s re-release would cement its legacy further. “Now, the new generation has the chance to watch it on the big screen with a crowd, which is a different experience altogether,” he says.

Evolution in Filmmaking

Reflecting on the shift from traditional film editing to digital technology and AI, he notes, “Technology-wise, so much has changed, but the emotional core of storytelling remains the same.”

Kannada Industry's Dubbing Evolution

Talking about Sandalwood's initial resistance to dubbing, which has since changed due to the rise of OTT platforms and a global audience. “Now there is no language barrier; people watch good movies regardless of the language,” he observes.

Future Projects and Pan-Indian Appeal

Upendra’s upcoming film, “UI” is being dubbed into multiple languages and release across India. “A good movie transcends language barriers,” he asserts, citing the success of films like “KGF” and “Pushpa.” He will next work on another movie titled “45”.

Family and Future in Films

When asked about launching his children in films, the actor revealed they are currently studying various aspects of filmmaking. “I don’t have any specific plans for them yet.” he says.

As fans in the Telugu states eagerly await the release of “A” in 4K, this cult classic will once again captivate and challenge viewers, reaffirming its timeless appeal.
