The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC), under the leadership of Vishal, has been trying to help small film producers through the setup of a Release Regulation Committee, despite which a record 12 Tamil films are scheduled to release on this Friday.
These films are —Ghajinikanth, Maniyar Kudumbam, Naadodi Kanavu, Kadigaara Manithargal, Uppu Puli Kaaram, Kaatu Payaa Sir Indha Kaali, Enga Kaatula Mazhai, Oh Kaadhalane Azhagumagan, Kadal Kuthiraigal, Poyaa and Arali. Though they have all announced their release date through advertisements in vernacular newspapers, not all of them have listed the theatres at which they will be playing. Except for Ghajinikanth, which features Arya, all the other films feature relative newcomers in their cast and crew.
“The makers of big films approach us seeking the allotment of suitable release dates, and without wasting any time, we initiate the necessary processes and give them dates. But small film producers have been creating havoc of late due to their lack of knowledge. They want us to help them procure theatres and buyers for the satellite rights of their films. And though we want to streamline the process and help them, it's becoming increasingly difficult,” reveals a source from TFPC.
“There was a time when there would be just four or five films releasing per month. But everything is in a state of disorder now. Although the TFPC's efforts are appreciable, there are 5 to 6 flicks hitting theatres every week,” says writer and trade analyst Sura.
Producer turned actor G. Karthik says that most small film producers are satisfied even if their films remain in theatres for a week. “If the content is good, a film will continue to run, whether it is big or small. There are too many films coming out this Friday, but for the past few months this sort of situation has been prevented by the TFPC,” he adds.
One reason for this crowding of films could be the impending release of Kamal Haasan's much-anticipated Vishwaroopam 2, which hits silver screens on August 10. In all probability, small films will find it difficult to get into theatres for even a week if they have to compete with this giant.
